The treatment site is first cleansed with antiseptic. A small needle is inserted into the notch at the top of the shoulder blade. A local anesthetic and steroid are injected to block the pain receptors and provide pain relief. X-ray or imaging guidance may be used to ensure proper placement of the injection.
Suprascapular nerve blocks take only a few minutes and are performed in the office. Immediate relief is due to the anesthetic; relief from the steroid may be felt a couple days after the procedure. Results vary from patient to patient, but results can last several months.
