The stellate ganglion is part of the sympathetic nervous system in the neck located on either side of the voice box. A stellate ganglion block involves injecting medication which blocks the sympathetic nerves to relieve pain. In addition to easing neck pain, this may help with pain in the head, upper arm, and upper chest. This injection may also help improve blood circulation in the upper arm.

A stellate ganglion block is an injection of local anesthetic into the front of the neck near the voice box. Using x-ray or ultrasound guidance, a second injection delivers anesthetic medication. After a period of observation, the patient can go home. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes and is performed in our Charlotte office.
